I have spent the last 10 years or more giving up one of my favourite things (chocolate) for lent, it’s always a struggle but I manage each year. However, I do find that I indulge more on other types of sugar instead which defeats the idea of trying to be a bit healthier! So, this year I’ve decided to take things a little further and give up processed sugar (as much as I reasonably can).
What did Google say? “Is it safe to do a no-sugar diet? Keatley says that this can be safe, provided you focus on added sugars and not all sugar-containing foods”
We all know the harm sugar can do to our bodies :
• Weight gain
• Poor skin
• Tooth decay
• Mood swings and irritability
• Lack of energy
• Craving more sugar
• Tossing and turning at night
• Risk of developing diabetes
I’m allowing myself honey as there are many health benefits and it has a lower GI than processed sugars. I’m also allowing myself to be a little lenient when I go out for a meal (still excluding desert) and when cooking at home I’m trying to cook from scratch. The only ingredient that I seem to be finding difficult to replace is stock cubes, in which there is a very small amount of sugar.
I’m nearly a week in and it’s going pretty well so far. I’ve made sugar free brownies using bananas, peanut butter and cocoa powder… Power balls with peanut butter, honey, desiccated coconut and mixed seeds…
Reducing processed sugar can help to reduce cravings, maintain good focus, improve sleep patterns and result in more energy and improvement in mood.
I’m enjoying the challenge that this lent brings, trying new recipes and being more creative with snacks. I hope that I can make some permanent changes along the way and end up with a healthier and more fulfilling diet where sugary foods are a treat and not the norm.
Who knows? Perhaps I’ll stay off sugar for good!
